Sicily is really two wine regions wearing one name. On Etna’s northern slopes, Nerello Mascalese grows on black volcanic terraces at 900 meters and produces something closer to Barolo than to a southern red. In the west, Nero d’Avola and Grillo ripen under relentless sun. We buy from both, because they answer completely different questions.
